A dispatch to the Central Hews from Cb.ee Foo, dated 2:80 this morning, says a big naval bat tle Is proceeding outside the harbor ot Ohee Foo. It Is thought the rort Arthur fleet made a sortie to reach Ohee Foo. and that it encountered the Japanese squad ron. A later dispatch says the firing ceased at 4 o'clock. The o.ry In Wake county superior court returned a verdict of guilty in case of J 0 Bleckley of Loulsburg charged with embezxltng $6,000 while selling ho'ses aud males for J M McAdow of Arkansas. The defense was that Blackley was a partner and not an agent and that proper settle ment of the partnership would have been made but for the fact that his ar rest frustrated a subsequent lnvestmt nt and lost thefand. Jndge Furguson Im posed a sentence of S years on the public roads. Blackley appealed and gave a 64 S00 bond. He Is a member of an ex cellent family of Loalsborg. State Superintendent of Public In struction, J T Joy ner, Is 111 at his home and was obliged to cancll an engage ment to attend the distrlot conference of county superintendents of public schools that convened at Statesvllle to day. The report ot the Raleigh dispensary for the quarter endljg September SOth ihows that the gross receipts for that period aggregated $38,878 while the groes receipts since the dispensary opened January were $117,681. Superintendent of Public Instruction, J T Joyner, gives out the statement that another rural local tax district has been established In Hen derion county that one other election for local tax will be held Oct 6th and that three petitions were presented to the commissioners Oct 8id, for the holding election on the question. He says that just one year ago the first rural local school district was established In the county atPleusant Hill and a beautiful building dedicated and doubtless the success of this first district has contributed much toward the establishment of tbe other districts In the county. The Retail Merchants Association of Raleigh .bow has a membership of 560, having elected 23 new members last night. It Is too dry for potatoes bat the best kind of weather for cotton pickers. Some of our farmers are carry ing tbelr cotton to Vanceboro to sell. Several of our people went to New Bern Tuesday. Mrs Julia Everington was one of the number. She had not been to the city In 80 years, although having many a chance to do so. Cutting hay is now in progress. Steamer Sarah Louise left the mill dock yesterday loaded with lumber for the Elm City Lumber Company at New Bern. Messrs Samuel Conner and William Chadwlck went to Morehead to spend Sunday.
